Provenance
The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Thanking her for the gift of £5 for "that most unfortunate lady. I have hinted afar off at the hopelessness of her doing anything lasting here" (see MA 1352.167 for context); adding that he is well and hopes to see her the following week; concluding "A variety of adventures are in preparation [in David Copperfield, No. IV] for you and Mrs. Brown this month, which I hope will only make you moderately poorly."
