The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with 70 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. Written from "Devonshire Terrace / Monday Seventh April." The published letter cited below dates this letter to 9 April 1849 and not 7 April 1849 as Dickens writes, stating "misdated by CD; from references to Shee and Mrs. Goldsmith clearly 1849, when Monday was 9 Apr (Easter Monday).
Provenance
The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Telling her he will go to Shepherd's Bush and pay the rent for the field; commenting on a letter from Mrs. Goldsmith: "From Mrs. Goldsmith there has come a second letter (a most honorable one) hoping to do with half the money - at all events just now, pending the expected return of the eldest son from sea. The rest was raised, but I have sent her your gift (saying it is from a lady whose name I am not at liberty to mention) and now hold the rest."
