The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).

Reporting on inquiries made about a woman named Godfrey and saying the Schoolmistress was making another inquiry that day; saying "Assuming that to be equally satisfactory, all the evidence is clearly and distinctly in the girl's favor; and with that reservation, I have made arrangements for her admission on Wednesday Evening."
