Summary
She informs him that "the bird has taken flight" on the Paris-Riga train [probably means her husband]. She went to see the seals while Madame Groult is in Venice. They were supposed to go together, but at the last moment she decided she'd be better off staying in Germany. There are Americans everywhere, even in her ex-chateau, where she is remaining before taking off for her low-ceilinged apartment in the rue de Penthievre, [in Paris].
