The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).

Inviting her and the Browns to a dinner on Tuesday; mentioning that the other guests will be John Elliotson, Chauncy Townshend, Joseph Paxton, and several friends of William Macready's; saying that he is "recovering from the clatter of the general skurrying away of this house to Sydenham" (a reference to the opening of the relocated Crystal Palace); concluding "I return to imbrue my hands in the life of Mrs. Gradgrind" (a reference to Chapter 25 of Hard Times).
