Summary
Enclosing a memo (no longer with the letter) which he hopes may help Knight with his memoir of John Nichol; specifying "The memo itself is not intended for publication, but you are at liberty to take from it any facts which suit your purpose;" describing how his friendship with Nichol changed over the years, and how they had drifted apart; writing of Nichol as a young man: "The charm of his conversation was then often great & had not that touch of bitterness which disappointment with men & things gave it in later life ; but my own defects of memory & other circumstances make me feel I am not really qualified to describe N's great & remarkable qualities as a young man;" offering to help with specific questions; asking Knight to acknowledge the letter.
