Thanking him for sending him some herring and discussing the sale and exhibition of various painting, including a reference to a "little Crome" and a "large Bristow"; expressing his unhappiness at a "3s/6d picture at Jones's", remarking "I would rather give you half a dozen pictures than it should be said I even gave my name for it"; making an offer to the recipient for his "plumb-lined subject - The sea piece and the picture by me which I brought from town the day you left here."
