Summary
Giving his opinion that a "Scot's historic play" would not interest London audiences, but might have some appeal in Scotland; remarking on recent news regarding the Portico Library, where Pratt is employed as librarian ("So the aliens have to rescue the Portico! Its rather amusing: but they seem no niggards & I hope you'll bear it"); stating that his novel will be published on November 20th, and is to be issued in the spring in the United States by Little, Brown & Co., that he may visit the Portico Library the following week and would like to check out the book Poor relations, if they have it, asking if they have any books on the American War of Independence, "preferably from the American point of view", and asking him to send them to him at once if they do; remarking that he "nearly stole" one of Pratt's titles, "Wayfaring", but "found one that's more suitable to a play ... 'Journey's end'", and that he is scheduled to publish "Three Lancashire plays" in early spring; remarking that he "saw Bennett's play" (possible a reference to Arnold Bennett's play "Judith", performed in 1919 with Lillah MacCarthy in the title role) the previous evening, "Its a series of brilliant street journalistic snapshots of character strung on to a heroine who as acted, wasn't interesting. But she's a popular actress & it may do all right."
