Summary
Explaining that he wishes to surrender his seat in Parliament (as MP for Clackmannanshire) to his brother (Robert Abercromby), and asking the recipient to assent to this proposed arrangement; stating that he believes it would be "unfair any longer to continue in a civil or military station", and that it is his hope that, upon his return to Europe, the King will allow him to retire from any staff appointments; reminding the recipient that he previously declined to assume the command in Judea when it was offered to him owing to his "advanced time of Life", and noting that "Nearly two years have elapsed since you put that appointment in my power; I have not gained in strength since that time, and in a year or more I may grow so old, as to think myself young"; concluding that, although he wishes to resign, he is "happy in saying our country will find in Gen: Moore & Genl Hope two most promising officers."
