Summary
Apologizing for not writing sooner but explaining his work load of reviews; saying "glad enough of course to have it, but a bit superphosphicated by the fumes. There never seems to come five quiet minutes to think in - or even to be in . I just long to live like a gentleman with nothing to do but avoid temptation & quietly [illegible] across England in search of a still green site for a tombstone. Heinemann still hangs like a carrot that may be artificial in front of my nose. I am going to lunch with him on Tuesday & may hear at last something definite then. But it will be scary to have; scary to lose - I know that. A rambling letter came from Guthrie yesterday, saying that you weren't feeling much better. I hope this refers to some days ago & not to just lately. Do let me hear how you are when there's a minute to spare. I wish I could come down to you for a few days - you would at least feel a bit more cheerful after I had come back;" discussing various reviews; adding "We are all pretty well I am thankful to say - except that the Master of the House is very sour with indigestion & a bit tired of being mortal. Does such gloom clear off after forty : & then serene & sanguine. Bye!"
