Notes
Letter to "My dear T."; almost certainly to be identified as Doyle's former colleague from Punch, Tom Taylor, who was evidently responsible for suggesting to Longman that they approach William Allingham to write the verses to accompany Doyle's illustrations for In Fairyland; Allingham was contacted by Longman in July of 1869, when he agreed to the publisher's request; In Fairyland was ultimately issued by Longman's at the end of 1869 with color wood engravings after Doyle's illustrations and Allingham's accompanying text.
Written from: 54. Clifton Gardens. Maida Hill.
Dated "Friday June 4th".
Doyle resided at 54 Clifton Gardens from 1864 to 1874.
Written on black-edged mourning stationery, paper watermarked with a year ending in "8".
Year of writing suggested by internal evidence (Doyle's In fairyland was issued by Longman's at the end of 1869 with a publication date of 1870), Doyle's address at the time of writing, and the fact that June 4 fell on a Friday in 1869.

Summary
Mentioning that he has heard that his publisher Longman has spoken to the recipient regarding the prospect of writing some verses to accompany a series of drawings by Doyle for an illustrated book to be titled "Fairyland"; proposing to show him some of the proofs of the engravings for the book ("none are yet finished in colors"), so that he "may form an opinion as to the kind of thing the work is to be."
