Originally acquired with the typescript of "Private Lives" described in the letter, which has been cataloged as MA 7170 and is housed separately. This letter was previously accessioned as MA 7170.1; it was reaccessioned in 2018.

Summary
Thanking Mercer for his letter and writing "It is certainly a coincidence that you should have come across 'Private Lives' in a bookshop in Brighton on the exact day that I went down to see the play;" saying that he cannot identify the typescripts: "Quite a number are given out during a production and they might be one of those."
