Congreve gives the place of writing as "Cowley St John / Oxford."
No year of writing is given, but given Lady Mount-Temple's birth and death dates, it was most likely written in the 19th century. Congreve first became associated with the Society of St. John the Evangelist, which was founded in Cowley, Oxford, in 1873.

Summary
Apologizing for the delay in answering her letter; declining an invitation and explaining that he is engaged to be at a retreat in York: "I am very sorry indeed that I am not free to help your Vicar, for it would have been the greatest pleasure if I could have been of any service;" thanking her for a book: "I made all my best friends read it, & no one could read it without wishing to try to be a better Christian."
