Forms part of a collection of letters addressed by Doyle to the editor of Belgravia magazine (Andrew Chatto) and the firm of publishers Chatto & Windus, proprietors of Belgravia.
Identity of recipient suggested by accompanying related correspondence; the British edition of Doyle's novel, The firm of Girdlestone, was issued by Chatto & Windus in 1890.
Sending proof slips for chapters of his novel, The firm of Girdlestone, and stating that the next lot of proofs should complete the book; informing them that he would like to have their decision as soon as possible, as he would like the publisher of the book to "have the advantage of the large sum which has been expended in advertising the serial both in London & in the Provinces", adding that this may be done by getting the book out as soon as the serial run is completed "about the end of March"; noting that his novel Micah Clarke has sold out another edition and that Longman will be bringing out a cheaper edition, that he is also bringing out a collection of stories entitled The captain of the Pole Star, in March, that Lippincott will be publishing his The sign of four next month, and expressing his hope that "all these ventures will react upon the sale of 'The Firm of Girdleston.'"
