Summary
Replying to a request for information on Spencer; saying "The only reference that I can give you, away from my books as I am, is the article on Spencer - Chambers Encyclopedia, which was sent me for revision before publication & is as accurate as I could make it. Edward Clodd's book "From Thales to Comte", Grant Allen's small "Darwin", & a book entitled "Herbert Spencer: the man & his work" published about six months ago by Chapman & Hall, & written by an Edinburgh Journalist - forget name - might be worth looking at. Grant Allen wrote some good articles upon H.S. for magazines & I should think Edward Clodd (Savile Club - to be forwarded) could help you to their titles. Thanks for your wishes as to my health. My serious attack of pleurisy has left me with only one lung & the doctor's say that for the next two years or so I must [illegible] for my health, & that the South Coast of England must be my northern limit for that time. I have had to give up all work in the way of writing & have to be satisfied with mere living - & the less to do the better I am!"
