Notes
Typescript of an intermediate draft of the short story "Descent of man." Published as a part of the collection of short stories entitled "Descent of man" by Atlantic-Little, Brown in 1979.
Corrected and revised in various colored inks by Boyle throughout.
Title written in black ink above text with "Signs:" crossed out.
Written over various years while Boyle attended Iowa's Writer's Workshop.
Accompanied by a collection of four revised typescript drafts of the story: 1. an early typescript draft with numerous autograph revisions and corrections (15 pages) ; 2. an intermediate typescript draft with some autograph revisions (12 pages) ; 3. an intermediate draft consisting of a photocopied typescript (12 pages), revised, and followed by 11 additional typescript pages containing two variant endings, revised; 4. a late, but not final, typescript draft, with autograph corrections throughout (16 pages) ; 5. isolated pages of corrected typescript (5 pages) from other drafts.
