Kay-Shuttleworth, in which he was informed that his knowledge of mathematics was no longer adequate for the position of inspector of schools and offered a position in charge of the workhouse schools instead; relating his subsequent decision to decline the offer when he determined that the new position would require significantly more time from him and interfere with his ability to see to the education of his sons; describing his experience attending a performance by Jenny Lind and a recent visit he made to the House of Lords, with some observations on his recent stay in London and an encounter with Archdeacon Thomas Ormerod at a dinner party.
