Summary
Thanking him for his "hint" about (the military school) Addiscombe, noting that "it does not seem to make much difference where you go yourself or send your posterity" and that "Cambridge has its Barnwell, and the Dean & Chapter of Westminster their houses, not 'with double coach-houses,' but with double entries. So perhaps after all a future major runs no worse chance than a future bishop"; stating that he is been staying with Brampton Gurdon and promising that he will not forget to visit Lexham, but explaining that he must stay at home for some months as he is required to write a history by Christmas and an article by November; referring to King Louis Philippe of France and his "villainy" in sending Queen Victoria a picture, saying "She should send him in return a portrait of Oliver le Diable, Louis XI's pimp and barber, for his private contemplation"; with some observations on the local election, literary notes, an article he is writing on "Jeremy Taylor" for the Edinburgh review, and notes from his readings on the sacrilegious practices of the Puritans.
