Summary
Concerning efforts to have Dr. (William Harcourt) Ranking appointed to a position in the local Norfolk county hospital and expressing his view that another physician, Dr. (Arthur) Tawke, will probably be elected instead; remarking on the appointment of Charles Wodehouse as archdeacon; explaining, in humorous terms, the history of the local "Holy War at Dereham" and the roles played by the various participants, described by Donne as the plot of a play, involving the rector, Dr. Bree the curate, the Bishop of Norwich, a "naughty house-maid", and members of the Wollaston family; with a simple stage diagram drawn on the last page of the letter showing the cast of characters in a semi-circle around "Scraggs on the violin."
