The screenplay for A Room with a View was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala based on the novel of the same title by E.M. Forster. The film was directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant for Merchant Ivory Productions; it show by Royal command in the United Kingdom on 13 December 1985 and released in the United States on 7 March 1986.
Part of a collection of film director James Ivory's heavily annotated shooting scripts, editing notebooks, and small scripts. Each of the thirty-one films he directed for Merchant Ivory Productions is represented in the collection, beginning with the production company's first film, The Householder (1963), and including, among others, The Europeans (1979), A Room with A View (1985), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Golden Bowl (2000), and The City of Your Final Destination (2010). The collection also includes two films directed by Ivory's partner, Ismail Merchant (In Custody (1994) and The Mystic Masseur (2002)).
