Notes
Typed shooting script heavily annotated by James Ivory, and with his mark of ownership on the front flyleaf. There is no title page. A typed scene synopsis (6 pages) enclosed in an envelope addressed in Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's hand to Ismail Merchant and James Ivory at the Maiden's Hotel (in Delhi) is laid in. Also laid in is an attestation in James Ivory's hand identifying the script, its date and location of writing, and noting that The Householder was "Merchant Ivory's first film, and my first feature-length one."
Based on the novel, also titled The Householder, by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (London: J. Murray, [1960]).
The Householder was directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant for Merchant Ivory Productions; it was released in New York in 1963.
Date of writing from a note in James Ivory's hand adhered to front flyleaf: ""The Householder" shooting script 1962." Location of writing from accompanying attestation and envelope addressed to Ivory and Ismail Merchant.
Part of a collection of film director James Ivory's heavily annotated shooting scripts, editing notebooks, and small scripts. Each of the thirty-one films he directed for Merchant Ivory Productions is represented in the collection, beginning with the production company's first film, The Householder (1963), and including, among others, The Europeans (1979), A Room with A View (1985), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Golden Bowl (2000), and The City of Your Final Destination (2010). The collection also includes two films directed by Ivory's partner, Ismail Merchant (In Custody (1994) and The Mystic Masseur (2002)).
