Shooting script of approximately 185 leaves (typed on the rectos and some with handwritten additions on the versos) heavily annotated and by James Ivory and including intermittently his storyboard sketches. Title page includes addresses for Merchant Ivory Productions in New York and London, as well as James Ivory's mark of ownership and notes. Script includes several additions typed on pink or blue paper, dated variously in September and October 1983.
The Bostonians was directed by James Ivory and produced by Ismail Merchant for Merchant Ivory Productions; it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, 1984, and was released in the United States on 2 August 1984.
Part of a collection of film director James Ivory's heavily annotated shooting scripts, editing notebooks, and small scripts. Each of the thirty-one films he directed for Merchant Ivory Productions is represented in the collection, beginning with the production company's first film, The Householder (1963), and including, among others, The Europeans (1979), A Room with A View (1985), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Golden Bowl (2000), and The City of Your Final Destination (2010). The collection also includes two films directed by Ivory's partner, Ismail Merchant (In Custody (1994) and The Mystic Masseur (2002)).
