Script of approximately 150 leaves (typed on the rectos and many with typed or handwritten additions on the versos) heavily annotated by James Ivory and including infrequently his storyboard sketches in the margins. The script of approximately 125 leaves is bound in a black three-ring binder with approximately 25 leaves of additional script material laid in following. Title page includes an address for WNET/THIRTEEN and is dated "Revised, 13 July 1979." The script is preceded by 1) a credit list (4 typed pages with additional handwritten note from Peter Weinberg, dated 12 September 1979; 2) a credit list (4 pages, typed, undated); 3) copies of press notices for The Europeans from After Dark (1 page) and Cosmopolitan (1 page); and notes (3 pages, stapled) headed "Monday."
With a note in James Ivory's hand adhered to the title page: ""5:48" J.I.'s script 1979."
The Five Forty-Eight was directed by James Ivory and produced by WNET/Thirteen; it was released as one of "Three by Cheever" in the United States on 7 November 1979.
Part of a collection of film director James Ivory's heavily annotated shooting scripts, editing notebooks, and small scripts. Each of the thirty-one films he directed for Merchant Ivory Productions is represented in the collection, beginning with the production company's first film, The Householder (1963), and including, among others, The Europeans (1979), A Room with A View (1985), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Golden Bowl (2000), and The City of Your Final Destination (2010). The collection also includes two films directed by Ivory's partner, Ismail Merchant (In Custody (1994) and The Mystic Masseur (2002)).
