Summary
Thanking them for inviting him along on a trip, but explaining that he has just been appointed superintendent of the Forest of Dean ("where there has been most shameful waste & mismanagement") and he will be too busy with those responsibilities; adding "The salary is trifling, little more than will pay for my son's expences at Oxford, but it is an office that suits me, & I shall feel a pleasure & pride if I can contribute to make the forest what it ought to be, a nursery of timber for the navy"; discussing some landscaping ideas for Coleorton; sending greetings from his family and concluding "when your new house is finished we all hope to come to the house-warming."
