Summary
Thanking Paul and his wife for their condolences on the death of Hessel's wife, (Lucie). Madame Arpels (see a later letter) took him to the country, hoping that silence, solitude, and time would help him to return to himself, but he is back in Cannes as sad as before. During his total idleness, his wife had always tried to shield him from the cares and sorrow of the war. He deeply laments how the war is affecting everyone's life. He asks Rosenberg to thank everyone in New York who has sent him messages of condolence and support.
