Summary
Thanking Shamoon for his letter and remarking that "I've been beset by doubts about my work throughout most of my life, and a letter like yours is restorative, to say the least." Noting that his view of the human condition has not changed since he wrote Sophie's Choice (published in 1979) and mentioning that he is re-reading Hannah Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem. Concluding that Shamoon's "warm and generous letter makes me feel that, in its miniscule way, Sophie's Choice, has made a dent, or a sound of some kind, and I'm grateful for your thoughtfulness."
