Summary
Concerning terms of engagement and his intention to retire; saying "The terms you mention cannot cover my expences and I have no ambition to travel 200 miles to act for amusement. Say £5 more, which I am sure you will think liberal, and I am your man. Respecting Drury Lane, considering myself fully competent to go through the Season in the same manner as I did last winter, I shall expect the same Engagement, in every respect, that I had then, and as I have made up my mind to take leave of the Public, you may so announce it, if you think proper; I must beg your answer (without fail) by return of Post, being upon treaty at another Theatre, and your answer must determine mine."
