Summary
Acknowledging receipt of two letters with the enclosed £10; asking for his suggestions and edits; saying "The novel must be a hit - If a hit, we shall both put plenty of money in our pockets - Therefore, give every page a careful reading. I dread the Winter - now so close at hand - as I compose always in the open air, walking. What do you think of my availing myself of an invitation to visit Madeira;" explaining that he has an offer from the Consul to King Otho to lecture in Funchal and in return would have all his expenses paid; adding "Situated as we are it would be a Paradise in which I should do twice the work I shall be able to do here;" giving him specific instructions on how to address letters to him so that no one will see them and promising to send him more pages soon.
