Summary
Thanking her for the beautiful gift of lace and linen; relating the details of the house he is in negotiations to buy in Buckinghamshire; saying "I am very excited as I have almost completed the formalities of buying a most beautiful Queen Anne House in Buckinghamshire - with a small garden and a clocktower! - in a lovely estate - a private [illegible] woods and a lake seen from the windows. Only 1 1/4 hours from London. It will need a lot of work furnishing and redecorating it, as it is a bit shabby (at present owned by Sir Arthur Bryant, the Historian) but the red brick facade and proportions are superb and there is quite a cosy feeling inside, as well as an enormous sitting room with a gallery and two sets of windows one above the other, five bedrooms, two bathrooms (we are going to put in another) and the most wonderful atmosphere of grace and peacefulness. I shall probably have to sell this house to pay for it, but now as I get older, London does seem far less attractive than in my earlier years when I loved it so - and Martin is agog with the plans to decorate and make more practical (I think we have to put in a lift for my clock too) and I'm sure the animals will love it there and keep the place alive for us. So you can imagine your wonderful present is like a housewarming gift - and the first one - with promise of a very exciting time to come. Dear Mardi, I love you and send you our fondest love and greetings." .
