Margaret Kelly Hughes, known as "Mardi", was the wife of John Chambers Hughes (1891-1971), the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO from 1953-1955. Margaret Hughes lived in France during World War II and volunteered to help French prisoners of war held in Meaux. She was decorated three times by the French Government for her service to the country and wrote "Les Lauriers sont Coupés" about her experiences during the war.
Gielgud refers to three movies in which he had a role which were released in the autumn of 1974: 11 Harrowhouse, Gold and Murder on the Orient Express.

Summary
Thanking her for her kind words about his recent films; saying, "Of course Harrowhouse and Gold and the Orient Express are only potboilers to keep the bills paid, as one makes no money at the National or the Royal Court but I really don't expect to inflict them on my friends. How like you to take the trouble to go;" relating his travel and performance plans, his readings on the radio for the Milton Centenary, a television production of a short story by Graham Greene where he "...played another of my tycoon monsters", and a future production of a new Harold Pinter play called No Man's Land... where he will "be with Ralph Richardson again - that I look forward to very much."
