Notes
One of a series of 6 letters written by Scrope Berdmore Davies to Baroness Blaze de Bury which previously formed part of the Morgan Library & Museum's Blaze de Bury Collection (MA 14300).
Year of writing suggested by the use of Baroness de Bury's maiden name (she was married Henry Blaze de Bury in 1844) and references to the imprisonment of Irish political leader Daniel O'Connell for his role as the organizer of so-called "monster meetings" held throughout much of Ireland in 1843 in support of the repeal of the Act of Union.

Bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987.
Summary
Declining an invitation owing to his poor health; noting that the "big beggarman" [Daniel] O'Connell has "alluded to Mrs. Shelley's work and has paid some complements to the fair writer" [a possible reference to O'Connell's appearance in a cartoon in Punch as the "Irish Frankenstein"], that the newspapers are full of "trials of Atmospheric railways and delinquent parsons - with a few remarks on the conversion of Scott Murray[?] and the 3 1/2 percent".
