Summary
Writing of the sudden death of Captain Elliston: "I did not suppose when I dined with Captn Elliston last Sunday Sevennight I should have to communicate at this period -- that he was no more -- A cold & fever which seized him about the middle of last week, acting upon a broken constitution made his illness short, & he left this world (for a better I hope (& believe) at 1/4 past eight last night"; describing his final days: "I heard of his illness on Saty, & saw him, every day since -- he was sensible to the last, & died tolerably easy, & with much resignation (I thought)"; saying that he has written to Mrs. Elliston and other family members; naming the executors and saying that a day will be appointed soon for the reading of the will, "the contents of which I am entirely ignorant of"; telling him that the captain will be buried next Monday or Tuesday; concluding "[a] Letter from Bath of this day brings me the pleasing intelligence that my wife is safely in bed (after a severe conflict) with a large boy."
