Notes
Abercromby's letter is addressed to "M. Gen. Nugent." Major General George Nugent was commander of the northern district of Ireland in 1798, during the Irish Rebellion. Given the contents of this letter, it is likely that he is Abercromby's correspondent.

Summary
Saying that "Mr Carmichael of Port Patrick" had forwarded Nugent's letter by express; responding to a request: "Did circumstances warrant it, I should not hesitate to send you what assistance I could afford you, but in the present case, and at this early moment, I do not think myself authorized to send [Troops] from hence to Ireland without orders from the Duke of York"; promising "I shall however keep what can be spared in readiness."
