Summary
Concerning Thomas Hardy's attitude towards inscribing books: "T.H., as you know, did not like being asked to sign books, even for close friends. If he gave me a book it was naturally inscribed. I never dared ask him to autograph any other book either for myself or for people who begged me to do this for them. Books sent to him for the purpose from America or elsewhere were generally left unopened. After his death I remember seeing a little pile of them, but it did not amount to a roomfull or even to a formidable stack."
