Summary
Writing that Caroline Doughty has developed reservations about her sale of a copy of Sassoon's Sonnets and Verses (see MA 4705.4-5): "Mrs Doughty is not learned in the ways of book collectors and she cannot believe that this transaction has not been trumped up between us as a device for presenting her with £25 at a moment when it is particularly needed! I am so thankful to be able to assure her that the book has almost certainly changed hands again by now, and at a profit"; spelling out the factors that fortuituously led to the sale and saying that he has told her "there has been no plot between us & no cheating [...] I hope she will believe this & not require an affidavit!"; adding in a postscript that "Robin is a little girl they have adopted."
