The year of writing is not given, however, Carpenter refers to a biography of Dr. Martineau. Martineau died in 1900 and the first biography of him by A.W. Jackson was published in that year. It is possible Carpenter is referring to the letters of Robert Louis Stevenson which were also published in 1900.

Summary
Concerning Knight's negotiations for the Martineau letters; saying "I am sorry that the decision prevents their immediate publication. I should have thought that the case of the Stevenson letters would have shown how much the general interest in a whole biography can be stimulated by such an anticipatory vol. Moreover the Editors could then have referred to them, or even quoted from them, whereas now that advantage is naturally withheld. But I hope that the production of the letters is only delayed a little while, & that your vol. may soon supplement the Biography. It is kind of you to give so much help in other ways."
