Summary
Concerning the purchase of Knight's collection of Martineau correspondence; reporting on his efforts to raise money for Manchester College for the acquisition of the Martineau manuscripts and informing him that his personal funds are not sufficient, at present, to purchase Knight's letters; adding that if Knight were able to wait until the autumn he would be able to pay him £75 "...for deposit in Manchester College. Should any circumstances make this delay inconvenient to you, I might possibly be able to get a bank advance; but probably what you yourself desire is assurance of a purchaser, and of a suitable home for a collection that means so much to you. The letters will of course remain in your keeping till I can offer to discharge my share of the arrangement. At your leisure you will tell me if this proposal will meet your views. I grieve over the burden of care wh. besets you & trust that it may be so lightened for you by the sacrifices which you are making that you may have strength & opportunity to concentrate your thoughts on a further work developing your 'Aspects of Theism'."
