Summary
Expressing his concern for him and discussing a possible position at Harvard and/or Chicago; saying "I wrote last October to Prof. Everett, Dean of the Harvard Divinity School, and also head of the Philosophical Department. As you have heard nothing, I conclude that their arrangements for the present academic year were complete. But I will write again to President Eliot, head of the University, & mention the invitation which you have received from Chicago. On the face of it, I should say 'Accept that at once as your base': it will give you an immediate introduction. If you can leave by the middle of July (the Harvard term begins at the end of September) you would be in time for the Summer Ethical School which meets at Plymouth for about six weeks in July & August. They cannot pay much; but as I found a friend had promised that I should lecture there, I gave one lecture, & received $25. I know one of the active promoters of the School, & will write to him about it. In '94 it was attended by about 150 students - mostly teachers - from all parts of the States. The subjects were speculative, historic, & sociological. You would be sure to have plenty of suitable material. Do not think of yourself yet as old! It is thirty years ago since I was a student of Dr. Martineau & what an amount of work he has accomplished since! May the sky clear for you after present troubles."
