Summary
Concerning an opening for an Examinership at the University of London; saying his father is in Naples and therefore he cannot "...obtain from him any opinion, directly or indirectly, as to the appropriateness of your candidature...the fact that you have served in a similar capacity at St. Andrews appears to me ample justification for your candidature here. The time is short for the preparation of your testimonials...I am sorry to hear that the election at Sr. Andrews is likely to be deferred to long: the suspense of possible change is trying & brings disturbance to ordinary work. As for your friend & rival at Montreal, a man who has elected a new country for himself should remain in the land of his adoption."
