Summary
Thanking Knight for his kindness with regards to Carpenter's son, William Lant Carpenter; writing that perhaps the people Knight has mentioned could go hear his son lecture and judge for themselves whether he would be appropriate for the position at University College Dundee (see MA 9252.5 for background on this); adding that he has his doubts, "owing to his want of Professorial knowledge of either of the departments you have named; and [I] should be very sorry that he should be again subjected to the disappointment he sustained at Nottingham, where he was at first very strongly encouraged by a gentleman believed to be very influential in the College appointments, who told him that his qualifications were just of the kind the Founders wanted; but was put out of the field in limine by the University Assessors whom they invited to advise them"; writing that he does not believe that "the Dundee people could get a better all round man, -- one more likely to promote really scientific teaching among the general public"; referring to a decision about a plan of lectures (also discussed in MA 9252.5).
