Summary
Saying that he was sorry not to be able to include Knight in their lecture schedule for Scotland: "I did my best to do so; but Mr. F[rank] Young, the Sec[retar]y of the Naturalists Society at Dundee, assured me so strongly that both there and in the other Towns in which the Lectures are to be given, the Physical & Natural Science subjects would be decidedly preferred, that I could not press the matter further"; writing that he is glad to see "Baxter College" (referring to University College Dundee) so well-launched and recommending his oldest son William Lant Carpenter for the principalship; adding a caveat: "But as he has been for 20 years engaged in business, he cannot profess that exclusive knowledge of the Modern Chemistry & Physics, which the Dundee people would probably expect in their Professor"; mentioning that his son will soon be in Dundee, so "those interested in the College will have an opportunity of judging for themselves as to his qualifications."
