Summary
Concerning a request by Knight to contribute to increasing the Bursaries at St. Andrews; saying "I have for long regretted that St. Andrews Univ. & Dundee have not amalgamated more than they have done. St. A's is by nature intended for an University seat; and Dundee is not so intended: but from whatever cause, the Dundee people seem to incline more to Dundee - It seems now more than probable that the D. College will become an accomplished fact at no distant date : and although I have no great interest in property in the town still I must do what I can to assist, if they succeed in starting a College likely to meet the wants of the town. It would give me much & sincere pleasure to assist St. Andrews also : but at the present time the calls on landowners increase and their receipts constantly decrease - I am therefore very sorry to be unable to join in increasing the Bursaries as you propose.
