Summary
Concerning Knight's characterization Caird's relationship to someone who appears to have been a colleague; saying "I fear you will think that Edward & I have taken great liberties in the way of revision. I felt it impossible to speak of 'intimate' knowledge, my relation to W.(?). not amounting to that, & I had expressly said in a private letter to Lord L. that though I knew W.(?) well, so as to be able to speak of his ability & attainments & also of the extent of his physical disability, I was not an intimate friend of his. Again, I thought the reference to his father of doubtful propriety, as rather confirming Flint's 'congenital' talk. Pray forgive me if I have gone too far. The upshot seems to be that Flint's intemperate talk has done no harm to anybody but himself;" adding, in a postscript, "Edward sent me the draft last night & I have sent it off this (Thursday) morning by first post."
