Notes
The letter is addressed only to "My dear Doyle" and no fuller name is given for George's correspondent. However, based on the reference to Colonel North, it seems likely that the Doyle addressed is Percy William Doyle, whose brother Colonel John Sidney Doyle took the name North after marrying the Baroness North of Kirtlington. Percy William Doyle was a diplomat who retired from the service in 1858 and was thereafter known to be a popular "man about town" in London, friendly with members of the royal family. See MA 9196 for a letter from George's wife to a "Mr. Doyle," who she addresses in a similarly intimate tone.
On stationery with red embossed letterhead: "Gloucester House, / Park Lane. W."
Summary
Inviting Doyle to dine with him on Sunday; asking if his brother Colonel North might be well enough to join them; mentioning that he has just returned from Goodwood, "where we had a long walk & pleasant party."
