Insisting that, contrary to claims evidently made by a publisher by the name of Welby [possibly London publisher Philip Welby], she has never given anyone [other than Constable and Co.] reason to believe that she would publish with them; congratulating him on the recent bestowal of the Order of Merit upon his father [George Meredith], "He ought to have had some such distinction years ago-immediately after 'The Ordeal of Richard Feverel; but rewards like these always come too late to give real pleasure."
