Summary
Thanking him for his congratulations; saying "It is with very [illegible] feelings that I have resolved to leave my work here & many friends, especially my brother. And I had quite made up my mind not to go, unless I were unanimously called, as seemed at first impossible. But the magnanimity of your old friend Strachan-Davidson [illegible] the election unanimous & from my old associations - such a call was about impossible to resist. I am sorry to hear you c'd have heard anything about my wishes for the future of my Chair except from me, as I had intended to write you my reasons for wishing Jones to come here rather than any other...owing to his long associations with me, & his peculiar prowess & sympathies;" adding, in a postscript, "Of course I s'd not wish either you or Jones to say anything to strangers about my wishes..."
