Summary
Writing to inform him that he and his wife will not be coming to visit the Candler's as previously planned, as "the idea of taking Jessie [Conrad] away from the doctors is not to be thought of", and discussing the possibility of leaving their current residence for good in September and staying with the Candlers after that; thanking Candler for a letter about Conrad's latest novel, The rover, and expressing his private unhappiness at the comparatively little attention granted his novel The rescue ("The book had a good reception from every point of view; so good as to make my heart heavy when I think that "The Rescue" ... did not get half the attention ... that "The Rover" provoked. Of course I have no reason to be ashamed of the thing ... but I do think that both praise and blame have been disproportionate and that causes me to feel that I don't care a hang for either.").
