Expressing his astonishment and delight [at being informed that he has been put forward for an award from the Royal Literary Fund] along with his self-doubts which lead him to question his own merits and the extent of his literary accomplishments ("But I have done very little;and this little I alone know how great has been the failure."); concluding that, while he has done little, he would, given the opportunity, do more, and inviting Pawling to judge the merits of his goals as a writer.
