Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
The letter is undated, however, Caird asks Knight if he will be joining the Church of Scotland with his congregation. Knight joined the Church of Scotland in 1873 with his congregation from St. Enoch's Free Church of Glasgow.

Summary
Expressing his pleasure at the news "...of the faithfulness of your congregation to you. Are you going to join the Ch. of Scotland as is reported? There is a little more freedom in it, though with no very defined limit. And there are some sons of darkness who might [illegible] your getting in unpleasant. I am sorry that your case seems to prove it all but impossible for a man to maintain an independent position in the Free Church for they are still getting a number of good men who must either maintain themselves against the influence of their [illegible] or lose a good deal that seems to promise excellence in them. I suppose from the discussion of the Synod, the F. C. will not further trouble you or restrain your hand;" adding that his wife is in Carluke is taking care of her father who has been ill.
