Notes
No place of writing is given. In The Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney, Hemlow posits that this letter was probably written from 11 Bolton Street, FBA's address in London at this time.
No date of writing is given. Hemlow suggests that this letter was written around August 25th; the references to James's promotion to Admiral place it after August 14th, when FBA first learned this news. See the published correspondence, cited below, for additional information.
Signed with initials.
Provenance
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan from the London dealer Quaritch in July 1905 as part of a collection of Burney's correspondence and fragments of manuscripts, bound in three volumes. Disbound in 1925.
Summary
Offering to loan him £15 this month and an additional £15 the following month: "my dear Brother, give me this little pleasure, & don't be too proud because you are an Admiral, -- for I am as proud as you, on that score [...] Besides, if you were only a Midshipman, I should write the same"; discussing how to get him the money, whether through her bankers C. Hoare & Co. or another way.
